Why I Make Art in a Time Like This

I’ve been quiet lately—too quiet, maybe. When I said I wouldn’t spam your inbox, I might have overcorrected and disappeared altogether. In truth, I didn’t feel like I had anything worthwhile to say.

But now, with a glass of wine in hand, I’m ready to let the thoughts spill out…

A Saturday That Stirred My Soul

This past Saturday was full of everything I love about Dayton. I started the morning at the Oakwood Farmers Market (even in the rain, it was vibrant and full!). From there, I joined the No Kings Protest downtown, where over 4,000 people filled the streets with purpose and power, calling for a more just, inclusive world.

We wrapped up the night with some much-needed couch snuggles and I went to bed feeling connected and proud.

But when I woke up Sunday morning, the weight returned. That storm cloud of emotions. The why-does-it-take-so-much kind of gray.

Why I Keep Speaking Up

Sometimes it feels impossible to promote Middleyak when the world feels like it’s burning. But I make what I make because art is rebellion, and community matters.

I wasn’t always vocal. I could have been considered a selective mute as a kid—true story. But I know that using your voice matters. So do your choices. Where you spend your money. Who you vote for. Who you surround yourself with. Whether you speak up or stay silent.

I’m not perfect. None of us are. But progress lives in the conversations, the accountability, the growth.

What Middleyak Leather Company Stands For

This brand isn’t apolitical. It never has been. Middleyak is about showing up—for our neighbors, for justice, and for beauty even in the mess.

So no, this isn’t just a leather goods newsletter. It’s a love letter to community. A reminder that small business can have big values. And a pledge that art will always have a place in the fight for democracy.

We create goods with grit because that’s what the world demands.

Let’s Keep Going

If you’re tired, that’s okay. If you’re mad, welcome. If you feel small in the face of it all—remember, there are more of us than there are of them.

We will rest. But not yet.

For now: Keep creating. Keep marching. Keep showing up.

Rage on, friends.
